Asbabu n-Nuzuul (Occasions of Revelation)
(Say: O disbelievers! ﾅ) [109:1-6]. These verses was revealed about a group of people from the Quraysh who said to the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace: ﾓCome follow our religion and we will follow yours. You worship our idols for a year and we worship you Allah the following year. In this way, if what you
have brought us is better than what we have, we would partake of it and take our share of goodness from it; and if what we have is better than what you have brought, you would partake of it and take your share of goodness from itﾔ. He said: ﾓAllah forbid that I associate anything with Himﾔ, and so Allah, exalted is He,
revealed (Say: O disbelievers!) up to the end of the Surah. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, then went to the Sacred Sanctuary, which was full of people, and recited to them the Surah. It was at that point that they despaired of him.
He commanded His Messenger to disavow himself from their religion completely
Allah said,
لَا أَعْبُدُ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ ﴿٢﴾
I worship not that which you worship.
meaning, statues and rival gods.
يعني من الأصنام والأنداد.
" لا أعبد " في الحال " ما تعبدون " من الأصنام
قال ابن عباس : قالت قريش للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم : نحن نعطيك من المال ما تكون به أغنى رجل بمكة , ونزوجك من شئت , ونطأ عقبك ; أي نمشي خلفك , وتكف عن شتم آلهتنا , فإن لم تفعل فنحن نعرض عليك خصلة واحدة هي لنا ولك صلاح , تعبد آلهتنا اللات والعزى سنة , ونحن نعبد إلهك سنة ; فنزلت السورة . فكان التكرار في " لا أعبد ما تعبدون " ; لأن القوم كرروا عليه مقالهم مرة بعد مرة . والله أعلم . وقيل : إنما كرر بمعنى التغليظ . وقيل : أي " لا أعبد " الساعة " ما تعبدون . ولا أنتم عابدون " الساعة " ما أعبد " . ثم قال : " ولا أنا عابد " في المستقبل " ما عبدتم . ولا أنتم " في المستقبل " عابدون ما أعبد " . قاله الأخفش والمبرد . وقيل : إنهم كانوا يعبدون الأوثان , فإذا ملوا وثنا , وسئموا العبادة له , رفضوه , ثم أخذوا وثنا غيره بشهوة نفوسهم , فإذا مروا بحجارة تعجبهم ألقوا هذه ورفعوا تلك , فعظموها ونصبوها آلهة يعبدونها ; فأمر عليه السلام أن يقول لهم : " لا أعبد ما تعبدون " اليوم من هذه الآلهة التي بين أيديكم .
