فَلَمَّا
وَضَعَتْهَا قَالَتْ رَبِّ إِنِّي وَضَعْتُهَا أُنثَى وَاللّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا وَضَعَتْ
وَلَيْسَ الذَّكَرُ كَالأُنثَى وَإِنِّي سَمَّيْتُهَا مَرْيَمَ وِإِنِّي أُعِيذُهَا بِكَ
وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

Asbabu n-Nuzuul (Occasions of Revelation)
وَحَفِظْنَاهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ رَّجِيمٍ ﴿١٧﴾
إِلاَّ مَنِ اسْتَرَقَ السَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ مُّبِينٌ ﴿١٨﴾
And We have guarded it (near heaven) from every outcast Shaytan (devil). Except him (devil) who steals the hearing, then he is pursued by a clear flaming fire.
Allah made the "shooting stars'' to guard it against the evil devils who try to listen to information conveyed at the highest heights. If any devil breaches it and advances hoping to listen, a clear "shooting star'' comes to him and destroys him. He may already have passed on whatever he heard before the fire hit him, to another devil below him; the latter will then take it to his friends (among humans), as is stated in the Sahih. Explaining this Ayah, Al-Bukhari reported from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet said:
إِذَا قَضَى اللهُ الْأَمْرَ فِي السَّمَاءِ ضَرَبَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ بِأَجْنِحَتِهَا خُضْعَانًا لِقَوْلِهِ كَأَنَّهُ سِلْسِلَةٌ عَلَى صَفْوَان
When Allah decrees any matter in heaven, the angels beat their wings in submission to His Word, (with a sound like) a chain (beating) on a smooth rock.''
Ali and other sub narrators said, "The sound reaches them.''
"When the fright leaves their (angels') hearts, they (angels) are asked: `What did your Lord say!'
They respond: "The truth. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.' So those who hope to hear something listen, and they are standing one above the other.''
Sufyan (the narrator) described them with a gesture, spreading the fingers of his right hand and holding it in such a way that the fingers were above one another.
"Sometimes the flaming fire hits one of these listeners before he is able to convey what he has heard to the one who is beneath him, and he is burned up, or sometimes the fire does not hit him until he has pit on to the one beneath him, so he brings it to the earth.''
Perhaps Sufyan said: "...until it reaches the earth and he puts it into the mouth of the sorcerer or fortune-teller, so that after telling a hundred lies he gets something right, and the people say, `Did he not tell us that on such and such a day such and such would happen, and we found it to be the truth among the statements which were heard from heaven.'''
Then Allah says:
وقال عطية العوفي البروج ههنا هي قصور فيها الحرس وجعل الشهب حرسا لها من مردة الشياطين لئلا يسمعوا إلى الملإ الأعلى فمن تمرد وتقدم منهم لاستراق السمع جاءه شهاب مبين فأتلفه فربما يكون قد ألقى الكلمة التي سمعها قبل أن يدركه الشهاب إلى الذي هو دونه فيأخذها الآخر ويأتي بها إلى وليه كما جاء مصرحا به في الصحيح كما قال البخاري . في تفسير هذه الآية : حدثنا علي بن عبد الله حدثنا سفيان عن عمرو عن عكرمة عن أبي هريرة يبلغ به النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " إذا قضى الله الأمر في السماء ضربت الملائكة بأجنحتها خضعانا لقوله كأنه سلسلة على صفوان " قال علي وقال غيره صفوان ينفذهم ذلك " فإذا فزع عن قلوبهم قالوا ماذا قال ربكم قالوا " للذي قال " الحق وهو العلي الكبير " فيسمعها مسترقو السمع ومسترقو السمع هكذا واحد فوق آخر ووصف سفيان بيده وفرج بين أصابع يده اليمنى نصبها بعضها فوق بعض فربما أدرك الشهاب المستمع قبل أن يرمي بها إلى صاحبه فيحرقه وربما لم يدركه حتى يرمي بها إلى الذي يليه إلى الذي هو أسفل منه حتى يلقوها إلى الأرض وربما قال سفيان حتى تنتهي إلى الأرض فتلقى على فم الساحر أو الكاهن فيكذب معها مائة كذبة فيصدق فيقولون ألم يخبرنا يوم كذا وكذا يكون كذا وكذا فوجدناه حقا للكلمة التي سمعت من السماء .
"وحفظناها" بالشهب "من كل شيطان رجيم" مرجوم
أي مرجوم . والرجم الرمي بالحجارة . وقيل : الرجم اللعن والطرد . وقد تقدم . وقال الكسائي : كل رجيم في القرآن فهو بمعنى الشتم . وزعم الكلبي أن السموات كلها لم تحفظ من الشياطين إلى زمن عيسى , فلما بعث الله تعالى عيسى حفظ منها ثلاث سموات إلى مبعث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم , فحفظ جميعها بعد بعثه وحرست منهم بالشهب . وقاله ابن عباس رضي الله عنه . قال ابن عباس : ( وقد كانت الشياطين لا يحجبون عن السماء , فكانوا يدخلونها ويلقون أخبارها على الكهنة , فيزيدون عليها تسعا فيحدثون بها أهل الأرض ; الكلمة حق والتسع باطل ; فإذا رأوا شيئا مما قالوه صدقوهم فيما جاءوا به , فلما ولد عيسى بن مريم عليهما السلام منعوا من ثلاث سموات , فلما ولد محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم منعوا من السموات كلها , فما منهم من أحد يريد استراق السمع إلا رمي بشهاب ; على ما يأتي .
