قُل لَّوْ كَانَ مَعَهُ آلِهَةٌ كَمَا يَقُولُونَ إِذاً لاَّبْتَغَوْاْ إِلَى ذِي الْعَرْشِ سَبِيلاً
Qul law kana maAAahu alihatun kama yaqooloona ithan laibtaghaw ila thee alAAarshi sabeelan

Ka ce: "Dã akwai waɗansu abũbuwan bautãwa tãre da shi, kamar yadda suka faɗa, a lõkacin, dã (abũbuwan bautãwar) sun nħmi wata hanya(3) zuwa ga Ma´abũcin Al´arshi."
Asbabu n-Nuzuul (Occasions of Revelation)
Allah says:
قُل لَّوْ كَانَ مَعَهُ آلِهَةٌ كَمَا يَقُولُونَ إِذًا لاَّبْتَغَوْاْ إِلَى ذِي الْعَرْشِ سَبِيلاً ﴿٤٢﴾
Say: "If there had been other gods along with Him as they assert, then they would certainly have sought out a way to the Lord of the Throne.
`Say, O Muhammad, to these idolators who claim that Allah has a partner among His creation, and who worship others besides Him that they may bring them nearer to Him: if the matter is as you say, and there is another god besides Him whom you worship in order to draw closer to Him and so that he will intercede for you with Him, then those whom you worship would themselves worship Him and seek means to draw closer to Him. So worship Him alone, just as those on whom you call besides Him worship Him. You have no need of a deity to be an intermediary between you and Him, for He does not like or accept that, rather He hates it and rejects it, and has forbidden that through all of His Messengers and Prophets.'
Then He glorifies and sanctifies Himself far above all that, and says:
يقول تعالى قل يا محمد لهؤلاء المشركين الزاعمين أن لله شريكا من خلقه العابدين معه غيره ليقربهم إليه زلفى لو كان الأمر كما تقولون وأن معه آلهة تعبد لتقرب إليه وتشفع لديه لكان أولئك المعبودون يعبدونه ويتقربون إليه ويبتغون إليه الوسيلة والقربة فاعبدوه أنتم وحده كما يعبده من تدعونه من دونه ولا حاجة لكم إلى معبود يكون واسطة بينكم وبينه فإنه لا يحب ذلك ولا يرضاه بل يكرهه ويأباه وقد نهى عن ذلك على ألسنة جميع رسله وأنبيائه ثم نزه نفسه الكريمة وقدسها .
"قل" لهم "لو كان معه" أي الله "لابتغوا" طلبوا "إلى ذي العرش" أي الله "سبيلا" ليقاتلوه
هذا متصل بقوله تعالى : " ولا تجعل مع الله إلها آخر " [ الإسراء 22 ] وهو رد على عباد الأصنام .
I'raab - grammatical analysis of the Qur'an
«قُلْ» أمر فاعله مستتر والجملة مستأنفة.
«لَوْ» حرف شرط غير جازم.
«كانَ» فعل ماض ناقص.
«مَعَهُ» ظرف مكان متعلق بخبر كان المقدم والهاء مضاف إليه.
«آلِهَةٌ» اسم كان والجملة لا محل لها لأنها ابتدائية.
«كَما» الكاف جارة وما مصدرية.
«يَقُولُونَ» مضارع مرفوع والواو فاعل والكاف وما بعده متعلقان بخبر كان المحذوف.
«إِذاً» حرف جواب وجزاء.
«لَابْتَغَوْا» اللام واقعة في جواب لو وماض مبني على الضم المقدر على الألف المحذوفة لالتقاء الساكنين والواو فاعله والجملة لا محل لها لأنها جواب شرط غير جازم.
«إِلى ذِي» ذي مجرور بالياء لأنه من الأسماء الخمسة ومتعلقان بابتغوا.
«الْعَرْشِ» مضاف إليه.
«سَبِيلًا» مفعول به.
