وَإِن كَادُواْ لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ عَنِ الَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ لِتفْتَرِيَ عَلَيْنَا غَيْرَهُ وَإِذاً لاَّتَّخَذُوكَ خَلِيلاً

Wain kadoo layaftinoonaka AAani allathee awhayna ilayka litaftariya AAalayna ghayrahu waithan laittakhathooka khaleelan

Kuma lalle ne sun yi kusa haƙĩƙa, su fitinħ ka daga abin da Muka yi wahayi zuwa gare ka, dõmin ka ƙirƙira waninsa a gare Mu, a lõkacin, haƙĩƙa, dã sun riƙe ka masoyi.

And their purpose was to tempt thee away from that which We had revealed unto thee, to substitute in our name something quite different; (in that case), behold! they would certainly have made thee (their) friend!
And surely they had purposed to turn you away from that which We have revealed to you, that you should forge against Us other than that, and then they would certainly have taken you for a friend.
And they indeed strove hard to beguile thee (Muhammad) away from that wherewith We have inspired thee, that thou shouldst invent other than it against Us; and then would they have accepted thee as a friend.

Asbabu n-Nuzuul (Occasions of Revelation)

(And they indeed strove hard to beguile thee (Muhammad) away from that wherewith We have inspired
theeナ) [17:73]. Ataメ reported that Ibn Abbas said: モThis was revealed about the delegation of Thaqif. They went to see the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, and asked for unacceptable things.
They said: Allow us to worship al-Lat for one year and make our valley inviolable ラ its trees, birds and wild animals ラ just as you have made Mecca inviolableメ. They persisted and insisted but the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, rejected all their demands. They said: We want the Arabs to know our merit over them.
If you dislike what we say and you are afraid that the Arabs say, you have given them that which you did not give us, simply say that Allah has commanded you to do soメ. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, did not answer them and this raised their hope. But Umar shouted in their faces: Do you not see that the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, did not answer you because he does not like what you have come for?メ The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, was on the verge of giving them what they wanted. And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this verseヤ.
Said Said ibn Jubayr: モThe idolaters said to the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace: We will
not leave you alone until you come close to our idols, even if you only have to touch them with your fingersメ.
The Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, said in reply: And what harm is there in me doing so, if
Allah knows that I dislike itメ. And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this verse (And they indeed strove hard to beguile thee (Muhammad) away from that wherewith We have inspired thee) up to His words (ナ accepted thee as a friend)ヤ.
Said Qatadah: モIt was mentioned to us that one night the Quraysh met the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, alone and their meeting lasted until morning. They talked to him, treated him as if he was one of their greats and chiefs and were agreeable to him. They said: You have brought something that no human being has brought before; you are our master and the son of our masterメ, and they kept talking to him until he almost agreed to some of the things they wanted. But Allah, exalted is He, protected him. Allah, exalted is He, then revealed this verseヤ.

How the Prophet would have been punished if He had given in at all to the Disbelievers' Demands that He change some of the Revelation

Allah tells us that;

How He supported His Prophet and protected him and kept him safe from the evil plots of the wicked transgressors.

Allah is the One Who took care of him and helped him, and would not leave him to any of His creation.

He is the One Who is His Helper, Supporter and Protector, the One Who is to help him achieve victory and make His religion prevail over those who resist him and oppose him and fight him in the east and in the west.

May Allah send peace and blessings upon him until the Day of Judgement.

يخبر تعالى عن تأييده رسوله صلوات الله عليه وسلامه وتثبيته وعصمته وسلامته من شر الأشرار وكيد الفجار وأنه تعالى هو المتولي أمره ونصره وأنه لا يكله إلى أحد من خلقه بل هو وليه وحافظه وناصره ومؤيده ومظفره ومظهر دينه على من عاداه وخالفه وناوأه في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها صلى الله عليه وسلم تسليما كثيرا إلى يوم الدين .

"وإن" مخففة "كادوا" قاربوا "ليفتنونك" ليستنزلونك "وإذا" لو فعلت ذلك

قال سعيد بن جبير : كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يستلم الحجر الأسود في طوافه , فمنعته قريش وقالوا : لا ندعك تستلم حتى تلم بآلهتنا . فحدث نفسه وقال : ( ما علي أن ألم بها بعد أن يدعوني أستلم الحجر والله يعلم أني لها كاره ) فأبى الله تعالى ذلك وأنزل عليه هذه الآية ; قاله مجاهد وقتادة . وقال ابن عباس في رواية عطاء : نزلت في وفد ثقيف , أتوا النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فسألوه شططا وقالوا : متعنا بآلهتنا سنة حتى نأخذ ما يهدى لها , فإذا أخذناه كسرناها وأسلمنا , وحرم وادينا كما حرمت مكة , حتى تعرف العرب فضلنا عليهم ; فهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أن يعطيهم ذلك فنزلت هذه الآية . وقيل : هو قول أكابر قريش للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم : اطرد عنا هؤلاء السقاط والموالي حتى نجلس معك ونسمع منك ; فهم بذلك حتى نهي عنه . وقال قتادة ذكر لنا أن قريشا خلوا برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ذات ليلة إلى الصبح يكلمونه ويفخمونه , ويسودونه ويقاربونه ; فقالوا : إنك تأتي بشيء لا يأتي به أحد من الناس , وأنت سيدنا يا سيدنا ; وما زالوا به حتى كاد يقاربهم في بعض ما يريدون , ثم عصمه الله من ذلك , وأنزل الله تعالى هذه الآية . ومعنى " ليفتنونك " أي يزيلونك . يقال : فتنت الرجل عن رأيه إذا أزلته عما كان عليه ; قاله الهروي . وقيل يصرفونك , والمعنى واحد .

I'raab - grammatical analysis of the Qur'an

«وَإِنْ» الواو استئنافية وإن مخففة من الثقيلة واسمها ضمير الشأن.
«كادُوا» فعل ماض ناقص من أفعال المقاربة والواو اسمها.
«لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ» اللام هي الفارقة بين النفي والإثبات ومضارع مرفوع بثبوت النون والواو فاعل والكاف مفعول به والجملة خبر كادوا.
«عَنِ الَّذِي» الذي اسم موصول ومتعلقان بالفعل قبلهما.
«أَوْحَيْنا» ماض وفاعله والجملة صلة.
«إِلَيْكَ» متعلقان بأوحينا.
«لِتَفْتَرِيَ» مضارع منصوب بأن مضمرة بعد لام التعليل وفاعله مستتر واللام وما بعدها متعلقان بتفتري.
«عَلَيْنا» متعلقان بتفتري.
«غَيْرَهُ» مفعول به والهاء مضاف إليه.
«وَإِذاً» الواو عاطفة وإذن حرف جواب.
«لَاتَّخَذُوكَ» اللام واقعة في جواب قسم محذوف وفعل ماض وفاعله ومفعوله الأول والجملة لا محل لها لأنها جواب قسم.
«خَلِيلًا» مفعول به ثان.
