وَلَكِنَّا أَنشَأْنَا قُرُوناً فَتَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعُمُرُ وَمَا كُنتَ ثَاوِياً فِي أَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ تَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِنَا وَلَكِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ

Walakinna anshana quroonan fatatawala AAalayhimu alAAumuru wama kunta thawiyan fee ahli madyana tatloo AAalayhim ayatina walakinna kunna mursileena

Yoruba Translation

Hausa Translation

Kuma amma Mũ, Mun ƙãga halittawar wasu ƙarnõni har lõkatan rãyuwa suka yi tsawo a kansu. Kuma ba ka kasance mazauni ba a cikin mutãnen Madyana, kanã karanta musu ãyõyinMu, amma Mũ Mun kasãnce mãsu aikãwa (da kai game(1) da waɗancan lãbarai).

English Translation

But We raised up (new) generations, and long were the ages that passed over them; but thou wast not a dweller among the people of Madyan, rehearsing Our Signs to them; but it is We Who send messengers (with inspiration).
But We raised up generations, then life became prolonged to them; and you were not dwelling among the people of Madyan, reciting to them Our communications, but We were the senders.
But We brought forth generations, and their lives dragged on for them. And thou wast not a dweller in Midian, reciting unto them Our revelations, but We kept sending (messengers to men).

Tafseer (English)

Allah says:

وَمَا كُنتَ بِجَانِبِ الْغَرْبِيِّ إِذْ قَضَيْنَا إِلَى مُوسَى الْأَمْرَ ...

And you were not on the western side (of the Mount), when We made clear to Musa the commandment,

meaning, `you -- O Muhammad -- were not on the western side of the mountain where Allah spoke to Musa from the tree which was to the east of it, in the valley.'

... وَمَا كُنتَ مِنَ الشَّاهِدِينَ

and you were not among the witnesses.

`to that event, but Allah has revealed this to you,'

so that it may be evidence and proof of events which happened centuries ago, for people have forgotten the evidence that Allah established against them and what was revealed to the earlier Prophets.

وَلَكِنَّا أَنشَأْنَا قُرُونًا فَتَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعُمُرُ ...

But We created generations, and long were the ages that passed over them.

... وَمَا كُنتَ ثَاوِيًا فِي أَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ تَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِنَا ...

And you were not a dweller among the people of Madyan, reciting Our Ayat to them.

meaning, `you were not living among the people of Madyan reciting Our Ayat to them, when you started to tell about Our Prophet Shu`ayb and what he said to his people and how they responded.'

... وَلَكِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ ﴿٤٥﴾

But it is We Who kept sending.

means, `but We revealed that to you and sent you to mankind as a Messenger.'

Tafseer (Arabic)

ولكن الله سبحانه وتعالى أوحى إليك ذلك ليكون حجة وبرهانا على قرون قد تطاول عهدها ونسوا حجج الله عليهم وما أوحاه إلى الأنبياء المتقدمين وقوله تعالى : " وما كنت ثاويا في أهل مدين تتلو عليهم آياتنا " أي وما كنت مقيما في أهل مدين تتلو عليهم آياتنا حين أخبرت عن نبيها شعيب وما قال لقومه وما ردوا عليه " ولكنا كنا مرسلين " أي ولكن نحن أوحينا إليك ذلك وأرسلناك إلى الناس رسولا .

"ولكنا أنشأنا قرونا" أمما من بعد موسى "فتطاول عليهم العمر" طالت أعمارهم فنسوا العهود واندرست العلوم وانقطع الوحي فجئنا بك رسولا وأوحينا إليك خبر موسى وغيره "وما كنت ثاويا" مقيما "في أهل مدين تتلوا عليهم آياتنا" خبر ثان فتعرف قصتهم فتخبر بها "ولكنا كنا مرسلين" لك وإليك بأخبار المتقدمين

I'raab - grammatical analysis of the Qur'an

«وَلكِنَّا» الواو حرف عطف «وَلكِنَّا» لكن واسمها «أَنْشَأْنا» ماض وفاعله «قُرُوناً» مفعول به والجملة
الفعلية خبر لكن ، والجملة الاسمية معطوفة على ما قبلها. «فَتَطاوَلَ» الفاء حرف عطف وماض مبني على الفتح «عَلَيْهِمُ» متعلقان بالفعل «الْعُمُرُ» فاعل والجملة معطوفة على ما قبلها. «وَما» الواو حرف عطف وما نافية «كُنْتَ» ماض ناقص واسمه «ثاوِياً» خبره والجملة معطوفة على ما قبلها. «فِي أَهْلِ» متعلقان بثاويا «مَدْيَنَ» مضاف إليه «تَتْلُوا» مضارع فاعله مستتر «عَلَيْهِمُ» متعلقان بالفعل «آياتِنا» مفعول به والجملة حال. «وَلكِنَّا» الواو حرف عطف «وَلكِنَّا» لكن واسمها «كُنَّا» ماض ناقص واسمه «مُرْسِلِينَ» خبره والجملة الفعلية خبر لكن. والجملة الاسمية معطوفة على ما قبلها
