وَالَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ لاَ يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَكُمْ وَلا
أَنفُسَهُمْ يَنْصُرُونَ

أَمْ لَهُمْ آلِهَةٌ تَمْنَعُهُم مِّن دُونِنَا لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَلَا هُم مِّنَّا يُصْحَبُونَ
Am lahum alihatun tamnaAAuhum min doonina la yastateeAAoona nasra anfusihim wala hum minna yushaboona

Ko kuwa sunã da waɗansu abũbuwan bautãwa waɗanda ke tsare su, daga gare Mu? Bã su iya taimakon kansu kuma ba su kasance anã abũtar su(2) ba daga gareMu.
Or have they gods that can guard them from Us? They have no power to aid themselves, nor can they be defended from Us.
Or, have they gods who can defend them against Us? They shall not be able to assist themselves, nor shall they be defended from Us.
Or have they gods who can shield them from Us? They cannot help themselves nor can they be defended from Us.
Asbabu n-Nuzuul (Occasions of Revelation)
أَمْ لَهُمْ آلِهَةٌ تَمْنَعُهُم مِّن دُونِنَا ...
Or have they gods who can guard them from Us!
This is a rhetorical question aimed at denouncing and rebuking.
The meaning is, do they have any gods who can protect them and take care of them other than Us. It is not as they imagine or as they claim.
Allah says:
... لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَ أَنفُسِهِمْ ...
They have no power to help themselves,
these gods on whom they rely instead of Allah cannot even help themselves.
... وَلَا هُم مِّنَّا يُصْحَبُونَ ﴿٤٣﴾
nor can they be protected from Us.
Al-`Awfi reported from Ibn Abbas,
"Nor can they be guarded from Us.''
ثم قال " أم لهم آلهة تمنعهم من دوننا " استفهام إنكار وتقرير . وتوبيخ أي ألهم آلهة تمنعهم وتكلؤهم غيرنا ؟ ليس الأمر كما توهموا لا ولا كما زعموا ولهذا قال " لا يستطيعون نصر أنفسهم " أي هذه الآلهة التي استندوا إليها غير الله لا يستطيعون نصر أنفسهم وقوله " ولا هم منا يصحبون " قال العوفي عن ابن عباس " ولا هم منا يصحبون " أي يجارون وقال قتادة لا يصحبون من الله بخير وقال غيره ولا هم منا يصحبون يمنعون .
"أم" فيها معنى الهمزة للإنكار "لهم آلهة تمنعهم" مما يسوءهم "من دوننا" أي ألهم من يمنعهم منه غيرنا ؟ لا "لا يستطيعون" أي الآلهة "نصر أنفسهم" فلا ينصرونهم "ولا هم" أي الكفار "منا" من عذابنا "يصحبون" يجارون يقال صحبك الله : أي حفظك وأجارك
المعنى : ألهم والميم صلة .
