Asbabu n-Nuzuul (Occasions of Revelation)
(Lo! We revealed it on the Night of Predestination. Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is! The Night of Power is better than a thousand months) [97:1-3]. Abu Bakr al-Tamimi informed us> Abd Allah ibn Hibban> Abu Yahya al-Razi> Sahl al-Askari> Yahya ibn Abi Zaﾒidah> Muslim> Ibn Abi Najih> Mujahid who said: ﾓThe Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, mentioned an Israelite who carried weapons and fought for the sake of Allah for a thousand months.
The Muslims were astonished to hear this, and so Allah, exalted is He, revealed (Lo! We revealed it on the Night of Predestination. Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is! The Night of Power is better than a thousand months). He said: This is better than the months in which that man carried his weapons and foughtﾒ ﾔ.
Then Allah magnified the status of the Night of Al-Qadr, which He chose for the revelation of the Mighty Qur'an, by His saying,
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ ﴿٢﴾
لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ ﴿٣﴾
And what will make you know what the Night of Al-Qadr is?
The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months.
Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah "When Ramadan would come, the Messenger of Allah would say,
قَدْ جَاءَكُمْ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ، شَهْرٌ مُبَارَكٌ، افْتَرَضَ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامَهُ،
تُفْتَحُ فِيهِ أَبْوَابُ الْجَنَّةِ، وَتُغْلَقُ فِيهِ أَبْوَابُ الْجَحِيمِ، وَتُغَلُّ فِيهِ الشَّيَاطِينُ،
فِيهِ لَيْلَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ، مَنْ حُرِمَ خَيْرَهَا فَقَدْ حُرِم
Verily, the month of Ramadan has come to you all. It is a blessed month, which Allah has obligated you all to fast.
During it the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are shackled.
In it there is a night that is better than one thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its good, then he has truly been deprived.''
An-Nasa'i recorded this same Hadith.
Aside from the fact that worship during the Night of Al-Qadr is equivalent to worship performed for a period of one thousand months, it is also confirmed in the Two Sahihs from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah said,
مَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِه
Whoever stands (in prayer) during the Night of Al-Qadr with faith and expecting reward (from Allah), he will be forgiven for his previous sins.
قال تعالى معظما لشأن ليلة القدر الذي اختصها بإنزال القرآن العظيم فيها فقال وما أدراك ما ليلة القدر .
" وما أدراك " أعلمك يا محمد " ما ليلة القدر " تعظيم لشأنها وتعجيب منه
قال : ليلة الحكم . والمعنى ليلة التقدير ; سميت بذلك لأن الله تعالى يقدر فيها ما يشاء من أمره , إلى مثلها من السنة القابلة ; من أمر الموت والأجل والرزق وغيره . ويسلمه إلى مدبرات الأمور , وهم أربعة من الملائكة : إسرافيل , وميكائيل , وعزرائيل , وجبريل . عليهم السلام . وعن ابن عباس قال : يكتب من أم الكتاب ما يكون في السنة من رزق ومطر وحياة وموت , حتى الحاج . قال عكرمة : يكتب حاج بيت الله تعالى في ليلة القدر بأسمائهم وأسماء أبائهم , ما يغادر منهم أحد , ولا يزاد فيهم . وقاله سعيد بن جبير . وقد مضى في أول سورة " الدخان " هذا المعنى . وعن ابن عباس أيضا : أن الله تعالى يقضي الأقضية في ليلة نصف شعبان , ويسلمها إلى أربابها في ليلة القدر . وقيل : إنما سميت بذلك لعظمها وقدرها وشرفها , من قولهم : لفلان قدر ; أي شرف ومنزلة . قاله الزهري وغيره . وقيل : سميت بذلك لأن للطاعات فيها قدرا عظيما , وثوابا جزيلا . وقال أبو بكر الوراق : سميت بذلك لأن من لم يكن له قدر ولا خطر يصير في هذه الليلة ذا قدر إذا أحياها . وقيل : سميت بذلك لأنه أنزل فيها كتابا ذا قدر , على رسول ذي قدر , على أمة ذات قدر . وقيل : لأنه ينزل فيها ملائكة ذوو قدر وخطر . وقيل : لأن الله تعالى ينزل فيها الخير والبركة والمغفرة . وقال سهل : سميت بذلك لأن الله تعالى قدر فيها الرحمة على المؤمنين . وقال : الخليل : لأن الأرض تضيق فيها بالملائكة ; كقوله تعالى : " ومن قدر عليه رزقه " [ الطلاق : 7 ] أي ضيق . قال الفراء : كل ما في القرآن من قوله تعالى : " وما أدراك " فقد أدراه . وما كان من قوله : " وما يدريك " [ الأحزاب : 63 ] فلم يدره . وقاله سفيان , وقد تقدم .
