قَالُوا فَأْتُوا بِهِ عَلَى أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْهَدُونَ
Qaloo fatoo bihi AAala aAAyuni alnnasi laAAallahum yashhadoona

Asbabu n-Nuzuul (Occasions of Revelation)
قَالُوا فَأْتُوا بِهِ عَلَى أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْهَدُونَ ﴿٦١﴾
They said: "Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify.''
meaning, in front of a large audience so that all the people could be present. This was Ibrahim's ultimate purpose, so that he could tell this great gathering about the extent of their ignorance and how foolish they were to worship idols which could not defend themselves from harm or help themselves, so how could they ask them for help!
وقوله " قالوا فأتوا به على أعين الناس " أي على رءوس الأشهاد في الملإ الأكبر بحضرة الناس كلهم وكان هذا هو المقصود الأكبر لإبراهيم عليه السلام أن يبين في هذا المحفل العظيم كثرة جهلهم وقلة عقلهم في عبادة هذه الأصنام التي لا تدفع عن نفسها ضرا ولا تملك لها نصرا فكيف يطلب منها شيء من ذلك ؟ " .
"قالوا فأتوا به على أعين الناس" أي ظاهرا "لعلهم يشهدون" عليه أنه الفاعل
فيه مسألة واحدة , وهي : أنه لما بلغ الخبر نمرود وأشراف قومه , كرهوا أن يأخذوه بغير بينة , فقالوا : ائتوا به ظاهرا بمرأى من الناس حتى يروه

«قالُوا» ماض وفاعله والجملة مستأنفة «فَأْتُوا» الفاء الفصيحة «أتوا» أمر وفاعله «بِهِ» متعلقان بفأتوا «عَلى أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ» متعلقان بمحذوف حال «النَّاسِ» مضاف إليه «لَعَلَّهُمْ» لعل واسمها «يَشْهَدُونَ» مضارع وفاعله والجملة خبر لعل وجملة لعل مستأنفة
