Asbabu n-Nuzuul (Occasions of Revelation)
The creation of Adam, the Command to the Angels to prostrate to Him, and the Rebellion of Iblis
Allah tells:
وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلاَئِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ ﴿٢٨﴾
فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي فَقَعُواْ لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ ﴿٢٩﴾
فَسَجَدَ الْمَلآئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ ﴿٣٠﴾
إِلاَّ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَى أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ ﴿٣١﴾
قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلاَّ تَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ ﴿٣٢﴾
And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to create a man (Adam) from dried (sounding) clay of altered mud. So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam) of My spirit (the soul which I created for him,) then fall down, prostrating yourselves before him.''
So the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together. Except Iblis (Shaytan) - he refused to be among the prostrate.
(Allah) said: "O Iblis! What is your reason for not being among the prostrate!''
Allah informs us of how He mentioned Adam to His angels before He created him, and how He honored him by commanding the angels to prostrate to him. He mentions how His enemy Iblis, amidst all the angels, refused to prostrate to him out of envy, disbelief, stubbornness, arrogance, and false pride. This is why Iblis said:
وقد روى ابن جرير ههنا أثرا غريبا عجيبا من حديث شبيب بن بشر عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس قال لما خلق الله الملائكة قال " إني خالق بشرا من طين فإذا سويته ونفخت فيه من روحي فقعوا له ساجدين " قالوا لا نفعل فأرسل عليهم نارا فأحرقتهم , ثم خلق ملائكة أخرى فقال لهم مثل ذلك فقالوا سمعنا وأطعنا إلا إبليس كان من الكافرين الأولين وفي ثبوت هذا عنه بعد والظاهر أنه إسرائيلي والله أعلم .
"قال" تعالى "يا إبليس ما لك" ما منعك "أ" أن "لا" زائدة
أي ما المانع لك .
I'raab - grammatical analysis of the Qur'an
«قالَ» ماض فاعله مستتر والجملة مستأنفة.
«يا» أداة نداء.
«إِبْلِيسُ» منادى مفرد علم مبني على الضم في محل نصب والجملة مقول القول.
«ما» اسم استفهام مبتدأ.
«لَكَ» متعلقان بالخبر والجملة مقول القول.
«أن» ناصبة.
«لا» نافية.
«تَكُونَ» مضارع ناقص منصوب بأن واسم تكون محذوف.
«مَعَ»ظرف مكان متعلق بالخبر المحذوف.
«السَّاجِدِينَ» مضاف إليه مجرور بالياء لأنه جمع مذكر سالم.
