There was indeed in them an excellent example for you to follow,- for those whose hope is in Allah and in the Last Day. But if any turn away, truly Allah is Free of all Wants, Worthy of all Praise.
Certainly there is for you in them a good example, for him who fears Allah and the last day; and whoever turns back, then surely Allah is the Self-sufficient, the Praised.
Verily ye have in them a goodly pattern for everyone who looketh to Allah and the Last Day. And whosoever may turn away, lo! still Allah, He is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise.

Asbabu n-Nuzuul (Occasions of Revelation)

(Verily ye have in them a goodly pattern for everyone who looketh to Allah and the Last Dayナ) [60:6-8].
Allah, exalted is He, says to the believers: モYou have in Abraham as well as in the prophets and friends of
Allah good role models, regarding their declaration of enmity towards their relatives who were idolaters,
which should be emulatedヤ. So when this verse was revealed, the believers declared their relatives who
were idolaters to be their enemies. They showed this enmity to them and absolved themselves of all the
things that they did or believed in.
Allah, exalted is He, knew that this was hard on the believers and so He revealed (It may be that Allah will ordain love between you and those of them with whom ye are at enmity) [60:7]. And He did just that when many of them embraced Islam, thus becoming brothers and friends.
Consequently, they mingled with and married from among each other. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, married Umm Habibah, the daughter of Abu Sufyan ibn Harb. As a result, Abu Sufyan mellowed a little. When he heard of the news of his daughters marriage, he said while he was still an idolater: モHe is an outstanding person, no harm shall come to himヤ. Abu Salih Mansur ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Bazzaz informed us> Abu Amr Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Hiri> Abu Yala> Ibrahim ibn al-Hajjaj> Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak> Musab ibn Thabit> Ami ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr> his father who said: モQutaylah bint Abd al-Uzza went to visit her daughter Asma bint Abi Bakr and took with her gifts: desert lizards, clarified butter and dry cheese. However, Asma refused to let her in her house and rejected her gifts.
Aishah went on behalf of Asma to ask the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, about this. Allah, exalted is He, revealed (Allah forbiddeth you not those who warred not against you on account of religion) [60:8]. Asma then let her mother into her house and accepted her giftsヤ. This was narrated by al-Hakim Abu Abd Allah in his Sahih> Abul-Abbas al-Sayyari> Abd Allah al-Ghazal> Ibn Shaqiq> Ibn al-Mubarak.

Allah the Exalted said,

Certainly, there has been in them an excellent example for you to follow -- for those who look forward to (the meeting with) Allah and the Last Day.

asserting what He has said before with the exemption mentioned, i.e., the good example that Allah mentioned before,لِمَن كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْآخِرَ (for those who look forward to Allah and the Last Day), thus encouraging the believers who believe in Allah and the Return to Him.

Allah said,

And whosoever turns away,

meaning, from what Allah has ordained,

verily, Allah is Al-Ghani, Al-Hamid.

Allah said in another Ayah,

If you disbelieve, you and all on the earth together, then verily! Allah is Ghani, Hamid. (14:8)

Ali bin Talhah reported from Ibn `Abbas,

Ghani, is the One Who is perfectly rich.''

That is Allah. This is Allah's attribute that He alone is worthy of being described by; surely, He has no equal, none like unto Him. All praise is due to Allah, the One, the Irresistible.

Hamid means, the praiseworthy, in all His statements and actions, there is no (true) God except Him alone.
